Guaranteed quality

Certifications

What the ENplus certification scheme is, what its quality classes mean, and how to read the certification stated on each of our product pages.

Pellet quality

There are many types of pellet on the market but, unfortunately, as with everything, there are better products and poor ones. The certification class a pellet carries is the clearest signal of which it is, which is why we publish it on every product page exactly as the manufacturer states it.

ENplus A1 pellets are made only from virgin wood, chipped and formed into pulverised biomass, without any additive, colourant or caustic product. Only a product that is controlled throughout the supply chain can be considered safe and carry the ENplus certificate.

Importance of ENplus certification

The ENplus system was designed by the German pellet institute (Deutsches Pelletinstitut GmbH, DEPI) as the reference standard for certifying pellets as a guarantee of the highest quality, for final use in pellet stoves and pellet boilers. These analyses are carried out under strict rules, following German protocol.

The analyses carried out as analytical tests on the pellets before, during and after the different processing stages serve to guarantee the final product on an objective basis. Pellet certification is performed to counter fraud or the introduction of non-natural materials during processing.

Pellet manufacturers and retailers rely on these analyses and on the certifications issued as a guarantee of pellets meeting high quality standards. Analysing and certifying pellets is a guarantee for the end consumer, also in terms of environmental health.

The ENplus classes

Depending on the type of wood and its origin, pellets are classified as ENplus A1, ENplus A2 or ENplus B.

Each product page states the certification class its manufacturer declares — and states none where the manufacturer declares none.

This code certifies all pellets produced using chemically untreated tree trunks, offcuts and production residues from timber mills, provided the wood has not been treated with products such as solvents and greases. A1 certification indicates a high-quality pellet with a maximum ash residue of 0.7%.

ENplus is the most widely used pellet certification scheme in the world. It verifies pellet quality transparently and independently, and works against fraud along the supply chain from production to final delivery. Our catalogue includes both certified products and economy grades; the specification on each page tells you which is which.

Frequently asked questions

What is ENplus certification?

ENplus is the pellet certification scheme designed by the German pellet institute (Deutsches Pelletinstitut GmbH) as the reference standard for certifying pellets for use in pellet stoves and boilers. Analyses are carried out before, during and after the different processing stages, to guarantee the final product on an objective basis and to counter fraud or the introduction of non-natural materials.

Which certification does each product carry?

The certification is stated on each product page, exactly as the manufacturer supplies it. Depending on the type of wood and its origin, pellets are classified as ENplus A1, ENplus A2 or ENplus B. Some products in the catalogue are economy grades that state no certification class; where that is the case, the product page says so by carrying no quality-grade row.

What does the ENplus A1 class indicate?

This code certifies all pellets produced using chemically untreated tree trunks, offcuts and production residues from timber mills, provided the wood has not been treated with products such as solvents and greases. A1 certification indicates a high-quality pellet with a maximum ash residue of 0.7%.

What are ENplus A1 pellets made of?

ENplus A1 pellets are made only from virgin wood, chipped and formed into pulverised biomass, without any additive, colourant or caustic product. Each product page states the class its manufacturer declares, and some products in this catalogue declare none.
